UN Security Council Strongly Condemns Terrorist Attack in Iran Resulting in 84 Casualties

WASHINGTON — The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on Thursday, January 4, 2024, issued a strong condemnation of the terrorist attack in Iran that claimed the lives of at least 84 victims.

"Members of the Security Council strongly condemn the cowardly terrorist attack in the city of Kerman," stated the body, referring to the bombing as a reprehensible act of terrorism. The Security Council expressed deepest sympathy and condolences to the families of the victims and the government of Iran, while also offering prayers for the full recovery of those injured. "Security Council members reiterate that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations remains one of the most serious threats to international peace and security," emphasized the UNSC.

UNSC members also demanded accountability for the perpetrators, reaffirming that all acts of terrorism are criminal actions that cannot be justified. At least two powerful explosions occurred in the city of Kerman on Wednesday, near the mausoleum of the former commander of the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), General Qassem Soleimani.

The blasts occurred as thousands of people were participating in a pilgrimage to commemorate the fourth anniversary of Soleimani's death. He was killed in a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020.

Initially, authorities reported 103 fatalities, but after forensic investigation, the death toll was revised to 84, with an additional 284 individuals reported injured. The terrorist group Daesh/ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack.
