Nikita from Kitchen Tips Online conducted an experiment at home to demonstrate the results. She purchased two bunches of bananas from the same shelf in the same supermarket. After bringing them home, she placed one bunch on the kitchen counter and the second in an airtight container, also on the counter. To the container bunch, she added ethylene absorption balls. These balls interact with ethylene gas, a naturally occurring substance produced in the banana stem. This gas typically spreads to the rest of the fruit, expediting the ripening process, especially when bananas are detached from their bunch with the firm stem.
Each day, Nikita examined the fruit on the counter and the bunch in the airtight container to monitor their ripening. She noted a significant difference on days five and six.
